Reminder for Open Enrollment Registration During #RedForEd

With the #RedForEd statewide protest happening, many of Arizona school districts have closed due to the movement. Despite these districts being closed, the healthcare enrollment period remains open. The majority of school districts do not offer automatic re-enrollment, so re-enrollment is the responsibility of the individual employees. For many schools, it runs congruent with the fiscal year of July 1st through June 30th each year. Enrollment education meetings and opportunities typically start in the spring and last two weeks to thirty days to allow the employee time to educate themselves and choose the proper coverage plan.

Don’t get caught off guard, make sure you register for the open enrollment period for next year to avoid paying thousands out of pocket. Monetary fines are now enforced on those who do not choose to purchase health insurance. You will be fined either 5% of your yearly household income or $695 per person for the year ($347.50 per child under 18) with the maximum penalty being $2,085.

If you do not register during the open healthcare enrollment period, you will have limited opportunities. There are a select few exceptions in which one can apply for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). Most of these qualifications are changes in marital status, adoption of children, or losing eligibility for other health care coverage.  Since the qualifications for SEP are limited, it is important to make sure you and your family get the coverage that you need.
